painfully accentuate everything that is missing in their lives. For those who H arav M o s he M or de ch ai G runfe ld
are blessed to be praying for continued nachas and success, perhaps one of the
most effective methods, is to extend ourselves to those for whom these days Rav, Khal Yereim Sgan Menahel, Yeshiva M’Kor Boruch
are excruciatingly challenging, to embrace them with compassion, love, and
support and to show Hakadosh Baruch Hu, that our lives matter, because they
matter to others. Building for the King
av Matisyahu Salomon asks a very interesting question. If one were to
ask us what type of הליפתה חסונ there should be on Rosh Hashanah when
R we stand before Hakadosh Baruch Hu, one could answer that we should
be able to ask for everything that we want for the coming year. We should ask
for health, we should ask for parnassah, we should ask for geulah. We find that
the הליפתה חסונ is totally different. During the year we ask for everything we
need, but on Rosh Hashanah we don›t. Why is this?
Reb Matisyahu answers with a mashal. In a certain city there was a warehouse
full of construction material. The way it worked was, that people would come
with a list of the materials they need and give it to the person in the warehouse.
People waited in line for their turn, received what they needed, and then paid
for it. One day when the line was very long, a truck pulled up and a person got
out and walked straight to the front. He immediately received what he needed,
climbed back into the truck and left without paying. One of the people in the
line asked the foreman, “Why does he get special treatment? We’re all waiting,
and this person just shows up, goes to the head of the line and gets what he
wants right away – and doesn’t even pay for it. How is that fair?”
The foreman replied, “You don›t understand. You are all building for yourselves
or for your customers. This person is building for the king. When he comes,
he gets priority treatment – and of course he doesn’t have to pay, because
everything here belongs to the king!”
Reb Matisyahu explains that this is true for us, too. When we daven on Rosh
Hashanah, we don›t mention our needs. Our הנווכ should be only on one point:
to coronate Hakadosh Baruch Hu and declare that we want to serve Him, and
build for Him. That and only that is the הדובע of Rosh Hashanah. After we
declare that we are servants of the King and we want to build for him, then
